Dominique de Leon is a 21-year-old artist living is Santa Cruz California with a passion for creating art, whether it be costuming, drawing or painting. She has been creating costumes since 2013, but it has really taken off recently and is where she wants to take her career. She has created costumes from the Fallout series, Borderlands, Skyrim, and many more. Several of these costumes have placed in contests such as Judges choice for Kreig and third place for Enclave Power Armor at 2015 BigWOW ComicCon in San Jose and Third runner up for Talon Company Merc and Grand prize for Skyrim Khajiit Mage at Level Up’s 2014 Cosplay Contest in Santa Cruz. In 2016, her Daedric armor won Master Craftsmanship at SacAnime.
Dominique’s artwork is heavily contrasted, as she enjoys working with themes such as darkness vs light, power, nature, dominance, and the beauty of the human form. Her artwork has been recognized by the Santa Cruz Art League by receiving a first prize as well as the 2012 Congressional Art Competition where she was awarded honorable mention by Congressmen, Sam Farr.
How did you get into Cosplay/prop making?
My friends actually asked if I wanted to go to FanimeCon in 2013. That is when I made my first cosplay. It was Princess Mononoke. At the time I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I never thought I would be able to do the things I can do today. It really just evolved from there.
Have you ever taken any classes or workshops for your art or costumes?
No, I am completely self taught. I learned by messing up. A LOT. It is very challenging and can be very frustrating, but it is very rewarding. Every time I do something wrong I find a better way to do it the next time. The only “classes” I’ve taken would be high school art and ceramic classes.
What conventions will you be attending?
In 2016 I will attending FanimeCon in San Jose Ca, Wasteland Weekend in California City, and DragonCon in Atlanta.
Do you take commissions?
Yes! I am always open to taking commissions. Both drawings and costumes or props. If it is not available in my shop please contact me directly.
What do you use to make your costumes?
It really depends on the costume. Anything that has armor is made of EVA foam. I am a true believer in using your resources to the fullest. Other materials I use include Hot glue, contact cement, magic sculpt, super sculpy, acrylic paint, metalic paint pens, spray paint, leather scraps, faux fur, furniture foam, elastic, etc. Most of that I do is VERY low budget, and more of house-hold materials. The hardware store is my best friend when I’m building a costume. I’m also learning to sew and learning to make casts.
